BOMONSTER Drives an Ultra Rare V8 Dune Buggy

I draw lots of custom cars and a friend asked what kind of cars my dad drove. I don't have a picture of his Plymouth Fury V8 dune buggy so I created this one. This concept pic has a more ground clearance and larger wheels than my dad's but you'll get the idea. All our cars were $250 specials bought from local classifieds. In ’66 he brought home a gold and white “57 Plymouth Fury. 318 V8, push button three-speed automatic. A week later, he had cut the top off leaving the windshield and dash, torched away the entire front seat area - doors, floor, driveshaft all now sitting in a stack on the front lawn. On floor jacks he positioned the dashboard close to the rear seat to now drive from it. His explanation: “The rear seat was in better condition that the front seat.”

He welded everything together, had the driveshaft shortened and then cut and welded the doors shut like a Jeep. He removed the outer finned-body panels in back so the inner fender wells became the outer fenders painted black. He cut the trunk off and added a small truck bed between the rear wheels for an ice chest, jack, tools and spare tire. The front fenders were reshaped into upside down L-shapes connecting to the original headlight position. Of course, the hood and original grill were removed. He painted the doors and fenders and it was the first car I learned to drive out on local desert roads. I was 11. All he said was “Look where you want go, don’t look where you don’t want to go.”
